Projects Over
the years, there have been many calls to the planning and engineering community
to share data that has enabled ITE to publish the Trip Generation and Parking
Generation Manuals. These are two
manuals the transportation planning and engineering community would have a
difficult time working without. However, within our region, no coordinated effort has been
made to gather and validate the most basic and fundamental data required for any
transportation/traffic study! Of
course, we are talking about traffic volumes.
Traffic
volumes are the most essential data transportation planners and engineers use to
perform basic traffic studies and to evaluate design scenarios.
One of the major reasons a coordinated data gathering effort has not yet
occurred is that the vast majority of data sets are held by multiple
consultants, a multitude of DOT agencies, and authorities in several states. Finally,
technology has made it possible to gather and share traffic volume data through
the committee’s first project, which is a free website serving as a clearinghouse
for traffic data. The
website offers: ·
A single access
portal to traffic volumes ·
Ease of
navigation ·
Reduction of
redundant counting (by not collecting data at the same location multiple times
for projects sharing the same study locations) ·
Potential cost
savings for your projects ·
Access to
historical counts to validate current data Providing
a clearinghouse for this information will allow transportation planning and
engineering professionals to spend more
time and effort analyzing scenarios and alternatives for projects and less time
on data collection. Please
note that the website is in development and that the data available is limited
primarily to a few intersections in Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ.
Our hope is that with the participation of consultants along with state
and federal agencies, we will be able to provide more complete coverage of the
metropolitan area. The following hyperlink is a portal to the Traffic
Data Management System website: The success of this site depends on the sharing of
data.
If your firm or agency is willing to share its data or provide support
for this project, please contact Luigi
Casinelli or Ben
Szeto. We appreciate your support of ITE and the Traffic Data Management
System website. |
